REVIEW: Undergang – Til Døden Os Skiller

Undergang - Til Døden Os SkillerUndergang
Til Døden Os Skiller
(Xtreem Music, 2012)
Genre: Death Metal

Formed in 2008, Denmark, UNDERGANG‘s intention was to spew fourth morbid, rotten and filth-ridden death metal!!  Have they succeeded?  After the first debut release went through the speakers “Indhentet Af Døden” (2010) I would say Yep, they’re getting there. After listening to “Til Døden Os Skiller” (2012) I would say “They are fuckin there!” A vile, evil, “lets shake your bones out of your body and smash you round the face with them way”, and this reviewer fuckin loves it.

Unlike the debut, this album has samples which adds to the shear horror coming from the speakers, it gives it a film-esque type of performance and feel to it. It plays like a gore film which the listener has been dragged into, unfortunately for this listener the spoken samples were in a language I did not understand but that still didn’t stop me from feeling alone and dirty in a sickening atmosphere. David Torturdöd handles the vocals which can only be described as hellish, deep, very deep low growls like some sort of awakened demon, no different styles on here folks, no pig snorts or inhales or whatever else the scene throws into the music these days, but it’s a good thing, any other style of vocal would surely not fit and lessen the impact and feel of the album. The tempo of the music is not fast throughout with just one bpm rate, it breaks down slow, held by drummer A. Dødshjælp. The shear intensity of the music is what shines through. Heavy, crushing guitar riffs, handled also by David Torturdöd that burrow holes into your body and shake every limb and an atmosphere so suffocating and dark.  The changes from fast to slow highlight just how tight this band is together, with very little lead guitar and everything on the riffs.  The slow parts are what grab you the most, and fuck are they slow, but so deep, it really does make the whole atmosphere. The bonus here is you can also hear the bass, played by K.Ondsind, thats what I miss sometimes with the scene, everybody seems to have turned their bass amps down, but not here!!

If this is what the future is going to be like for UNDERGANG then I want in and I sit patiently for their next release. If you want to buy yourselves an album, something that will bring the darkest, deepest pits of filth and rotten flesh into your house, this is the album for you.  I know it might sound stupid, but this is just Death Metal……but it’s the most brutalist thing ive ever fuckin heard!!
